Lost Luggage For Retail

Lost my Luggage

One Person’s Loss, Another’s Person Treasure

It’s every traveler’s worst nightmare – losing a carefully packed, strategically weighed piece of luggage consisting of all of your personal necessities.

Did you know that on average 1.4 million suitcases are lost each year? What if I told you that your luggage is likely being sent to warehouses and auctioned off for profit?

Across the world, people are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars at storage unit auctions. They have become tourist attractions across the world.

In most cases, you can only see what’s inside of the suitcase after purchasing it, so you could end up with name-brand clothing, sporting equipment, electronic devices and jewelry, or in some less fortunate cases, someone’s dirty underwear. But that’s what makes the auction as thrilling as it is.

Social media influencers such as Youtube and Ticktokers have made this a form of entertainment by recording themselves purchasing luggage for thousands of dollars and opening it up on camera for the world to see. And it’s very entertaining to watch what they get as well as their reactions to what they find inside anonymous luggage.

All sorts of items have been sold at luggage auctions – from expensive clothes and jewelry to Egyptian artifacts, suits of armor, famous puppets from movies, and yes, even rattlesnakes and exotic frogs.

Losing Luggage is Becoming More Usual

Losing luggage has become so common, and there are a number of reasons why luggage can go missing. From lost to damaged luggage tags and system errors, the airline only gives you 90 days to reunite with your missing luggage. Once that time period has expired, it’s sent off to a warehouse and your chances of ever getting back to your luggage are incredibly slim.

There have been ironic cases of people going to luggage auctions and finding a pair of ski boots and expensive coats that had been lost in luggage months, or even years ago. But a case like that is rare, so I wouldn’t have high hopes about that kind of thing happening to you.

Thankfully, there are solutions to this problem. By learning about the different ways a suitcase can go missing, and how to ensure the best protection possible, you will decrease your chances of this ever happening to you while enjoying a care-free glass of prosecco on your flight.

The Common Reasons Your Luggage Gets Lost

It’s almost too easy to lose your luggage and unfortunately some of the most common reasons as to why your luggage gets lost is out of your control.

One of the most common reasons is a lost or damaged bag tag. Luggage tags direct airport staff to the whereabouts of your luggage and where it’s going, but when lost or damaged, your luggage will remain at the airport it was dropped off at rather than making it to your final destination.

Airport luggage labels always have a 2nd smaller label the gate agent should stick on the bag. Make sure they do that.

Another common reason luggage seems to disappear is an error in your destination code. Airport staff can accidentally type the wrong destination code for your luggage causing it to arrive at a completely different airport or country. Mistakes happen all the time, we are only human.

Along with the subject of mistakes, it’s common that your luggage can be unintentionally loaded onto the wrong aircraft. If the baggage handler misreads the baggage tag, your luggage can easily end up on the wrong plane. This usually happens when a travel day consists of multiple flights and connection flights.

Just like airport staff and luggage handlers, we too, can make mistakes. With flight delays, we rush to get from one place to the next, causing us to desert one or even all of our luggage. Being forgetful in a state of chaos and panic is normal and happens to the best of us.

How To Avoid Losing Your Luggage

As I mentioned earlier, a damaged or missing luggage tag is out of our control, and unfortunately accidents are bound to happen. But there are ways to avoid this kind of nightmare happening to you.

Here are a few tips that can increase your chances of reuniting with your lost luggage:

1. Label your baggage on the inside and outside

Before checking a bag, label it. This will be helpful to those looking for your lost luggage once it’s been reported missing. By labeling your name and address to the inside of your luggage can also increase your chances.

2. Color Tag Your Bag

Get a roll of bright tape and wrap a piece around something on your bag. This way you’ll be able to spot your bag while it’s surrounded by thousands of other missing bags. If your luggage is black and plain and carry’s no labels, it’s going to be a lot trickier for the airline to successfully track it down.

3. Take a photograph of your bag

A picture is worth a thousand descriptions. By having a picture of your luggage, you’ll be able to give more insight to the airport staff on what your bags look like so they can have a better chance at finding it and returning it to you.

4. Remove all previous tags

Before checking your baggage, rip off any old baggage tags. This can be confusing to airport staff as they may scan the wrong tag resulting in your luggage going to the wrong location.

Practicing these tips will increase your chances of finding lost luggage, but there is a way of avoiding the time, energy and hassle.

What Happens To Unclaimed Luggage

As soon as the unclaimed luggage is reported and sent to lost property, the responsible airline is notified and they begin their attempts to contact the owner. However, this isn’t always successful due to the fact that not all luggage have tags on them providing enough information about the passenger.

Airlines usually keep unclaimed luggage around the terminal where it was found for approximately five days before shipping it to a central warehouse. After approximately 90 days, if a passenger does not claim their missing luggage and the airline fails to reunite the bags with their rightful owner, the lost items get sent to an unclaimed baggage unit and eventually, sold off to a third-party buyer. There are many reasons why passengers do not claim their missing luggage, one of them being because they simply do not know how to. Losing a baggage is not only stressful, but it can even feel hopeless – like looking for a needle in a haystack. More often than not, after a certain time period, people give up and accept defeat.

One of the largest and most popular warehouses is located in Scottsboro, Alabama consisting of 40,000 square-feet and roughly 7,000 new items daily. It has become much more than just a thrift store by selling items from expensive watches to engagement rings and wedding dresses, the warehouse has become so famous it has become one of Alabama’s top tourist attractions with around one million visitors a year from all over the world hosting annual events, winter and ski sales, and their very own version of Black Friday.

With finds consisting of high-end items, from a jacket signed by Paul McCartney, a Versace gown, Vera Wang wedding dresses, platinum rolexes to 5.8 carat diamond bands packed in a sock. The store consists of a women’s and men’s area, kids clothing, sporting goods, books section, formal clothing, and electronics section. It’s just like a thrift store but better. You never know what you can come across and find. It’s one of the coolest attributes of this unconventional shopping experience.

With so much lost luggage, there has even been a museum created for the weirdest finds, such as a a six-foot-tall paper mache Tinkerbell, a set of McDonald’s arches, a puppet from the movie Labyrinth, live rattlesnakes, 50 vacuum-packed frogs, armor suits, an engraved headstone, and a 4,000 year old mummified hawk.

What To Do In The First Few Moments Of a Car Accident

Think Before You Act

If you’ve been in a car accident, then you know the fear and shock that comes with it. Adrenaline rushes through your body, altering your state of mind, numbing your body from pain, and impairing the critical decisions you make within the first few minutes of being in a car accident. But the first few minutes are pivotal. Do you get out of the car? Or do you wait for help? Any slight movement could worsen an injury or paralyze you.

There are so many things to consider when it comes to car accidents, but it’s important to be prepared for the worst. In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about what you should do within the first minutes of being in a car accident, and what you can do to help someone. With first aid knowledge and a few tips and tricks on how to think smart and act quickly, your chances of saving your life and the life of somebody else are inevitably higher.

Preparing For a Car Accident, Let’s Talk About Fight and Flight

Nobody wants to prepare for an accident. It can almost feel like we’re anticipating it. But the truth is, it’s important to be prepared and know what to do in a dangerous situation. Car accidents can happen to anyone, even the best of drivers, so it’s wise to educate yourself on what you can do in such a situation where time is of the essence. In moments of fear and shock, it can be difficult to gauge what the right thing to do is.

Everybody has a fight or flight response to trauma. Some people have a fight response  while others have a flight response. Those who fight attempt to remove themselves from situations immediately with little to no hesitation or thought. And those who have the flight response tend to freeze and remain where they are until helped.

Unfortunately, there is no better response when it comes to car accidents. Fight and flight hold both pro’s and con’s. For example, if you remove yourself from a vehicle without any help, you risk injuring yourself or worsening your already existing injuries. But if you stay in the vehicle you risk the chance of getting trapped in a fire.

Typically, when car accidents occur, medical and professional help is on the way within minutes, chances are you won’t have much time to make a decision of whether or not you should exit or remain in the vehicle.

Let’s Talk About First Aid: The Basic C’s and P’s To Remember When Helping Someone In a Car Accident

Have you ever witnessed a car accident? The urge to help but the fear of not knowing how to can be a terrifying experience leaving you guilty and helpless. In the midst of an emergency, it can be difficult to think clearly or strategically. Training your brain to act quickly and efficiently in stressful, high-pressure situations can only do more good than harm. There are three basic C’s and P’s to remember when attempting to help somebody in a critical situation:

The Three C’s of Emergency: Check, Call, and Care

Check

This means checking for anything unsafe. If the emergency is surrounded by danger, further assistance may be needed. Running into a scene without taking precautions may lead to more harm for yourself or others. It’s important to take the evolution of the scene. Once you have assessed the scene and it is safe, check if the victim is breathing.

Call

In emergency situations, it’s important to call 911 immediately. As a first responder, you must act right away to get help from professionals. Inspect the scene, gather important or helpful information. If a car accident is in the woods, the chances of a fire are automatically increased. If the car accident is on the highway, the chances of another car hitting the wrecked car are automatically increased. Provide the correct information for paramedics and get them involved as soon as possible.

Care

After checking the scene and calling for help, provide care until medical professionals arrive on the scene. Monitor victims’ breathing or attempt to stop bleeding. You may need to perform CPR. Follow the circulation-airway-breathing of first aid below.

The Three P’s of First Aid: Preserve life, Prevent Deterioration, and Promote Recovery

Preserve life

As a first responder to any situation, your first priority is to preserve life. Start with C-A-B: circulation, airway, and breathing. Assess the quality of the victim’s circulation and ensure the victim has no blocks to their airway and that they are breathing. The goal is to prevent the condition from worsening in any way.

Prevent deterioration

Do what you can to keep the victim in stable condition until medical professionals arrive. The goal is to prevent the condition from worsening. This may include moving the victim to a safer location, applying first aid, or even staying with them and providing comfort and company until the paramedics arrive.

Promote recovery

After you’ve done what you can do with first aid treatment, your job now is to promote recovery. This can be done by encouraging confidence, providing comfort, and attempting to relieve pain.

The tips and tricks for emergency situations and first aid will differ based on each specific situation.

But the bracelet can give them all of the information they need within seconds: blood type, height, weight, allergies, and other medical concerns that may be detrimental to the paramedics. Are You Tired Of Losing Things?

Let’s Get Into Why We Lose Things and How What We Can Do About It

Are You a Professional Misplacer?

It’s one of the most frustrating feelings in the world – losing something that has value to us. Whether it’s a credit card, a pair of keys, a laptop, or our beloved pup, it never gets easy, and we will never get used to the feeling of misplacing or losing something that is important to us.

As a professional misplacer, I’ve always wondered, is it just me? Well as it turns out, I’m not alone. Collectively, we spend on average 2.5 days a year just looking for misplaced items. That’s almost half a workweek, or a whole weekend, that we lose just searching for something. But lost time isn’t the only consequence that comes with being forgetful. According to a study that reveals the most common items that go missing at home, 60 percent of people have either been late to school or work, 49 percent have missed appointments or meetings, and 22 percent have missed flights, trains or buses, all because of searching for a misplaced object.

The question remains, what can we do about it? Fortunately, there are studies that can help us understand why we tend to lose things so frequently, and what we can do to avoid losing them or even have them possibly returned to us.

So, Why Do We Lose Things?

The “oh sh*t”, where did I put that?” is a ritual every person has gone through more times than we can count. It’s common for people to have a mental checklist before leaving the house, “phone, wallet, headphones, keys, wait, where are my keys?” Maybe they’re on the dining room table, or maybe they’re in a bag. Why can’t you remember where you put them? You were certain you had seen them this morning. It’s truly a frustrating monologue that feels worse as the minutes go on. Let’s cover a few reasons why you may be losing your things:

You’re Running on Autopilot

Typically, we lose things when we’re in the momentum of things – in our daily routines, whether it’s getting ready in the morning or coming home from work at the end of the day. Because we’re so comfortable within our routines and we practice them all the time, it becomes a time for us to think about everything or anything else than focus on where we’re placing things.

Have you ever been driving down a road that you’ve driven on a million times? Have you ever caught yourself thinking or daydreaming and suddenly wonder how you haven’t crashed? That is because our minds are on autopilot and we are resorting to muscle memory.

You’re Over-focusing on Losing things

Have you ever put something somewhere very specific, convincing yourself “I definitely won’t forget putting this here”, and once you look for it, you simply can’t remember where that hiding spot is. Whether it’s hiding cash in a book and storing it under your cabinet or placing your mailbox key in your pantry, we can easily forget the odd hiding spots we think are unforgettable. Over-focusing on losing things can get us over-thinking, resulting in confusion and frustration.

Multi-tasking

Multi-tasking is a common part of our day-to-day routines. We multitask all the time, thinking of a thousand things at once, checking off a mental checklist while getting dressed, brushing our teeth, making breakfast or coffee, and feeding our pets. But even the best multi-taskers out there can result in losing something or misplacing an object without even realizing it. Studies have shown that multitasking can lead you to misplace things like your phone, keys or wallet in odd locations, such as your refrigerator or laundry bin.

The Most Common Things We Lose

It’s ironic, but we misplace and lose the things that are more important to us. On average, we spend about 15 minutes searching for something around the house. These objects include:

  • House keys 21.3 percent
  • Wallets 20.2 percent
  • Umbrellas 19 percent
  • Passports 18.9 percent
  • Drivers licenses 18.8 percent
  • Debit cards 18.7 percent

why do I keep loosing things

Search With Purpose, Not Panic

Are you a little bit of a hypochondriac? Do you sometimes wonder if you have a brain tumor because you keep losing things? Rest assured, you are not alone, and chances are, you don’t have a brain tumor either. According to an article on Vice, experts studied that lapses in memory can happen to anyone, even those with a great memory. According to Solomon, a researcher from Vice, “it is an ineluctable part of the human condition to lose things.” And the reason can be as simple as the mind being able to only deal, remember, or process one thing at a time.

When we are panicked, we let fear and anxiety control us, letting the strategy part of our minds drift away. Remaining calm while looking for something is easier said than done, especially if you’re looking for a missing pet or child. However, running around in circles and searching in the same place will only make you lose time.

Steps on Looking for Something

Think of where you last saw what you are looking for:

Ask yourself, how long ago did you see it? Where did you see it?

Retrace your steps:

Go over your routine. Retrace every step you took before realizing you lost what you are looking for. Think strategically and don’t hesitate to look in odd places. Remember that when the mind is on overdrive, it is not uncommon for a person to misplace something in the trash.

Ask for help:

If you’re having trouble remembering where you put something, or if you’ve happened to lose your pet or child, call or ask for help. Depending on the situation, of course. Unfortunately, 911 won’t be able to help you track down your lost pet or laptop, but they will try to help you find your missing child. If you have happened to lose your pet, ask your friends to help you with the search process. The more eyes, the better.

what to do if you lost something at the beach?

What If You’re Sure Something Is Lost: How To Protect What’s Valuable To You

Regardless of how much we love and cherish something, we still face the terrifying risk of losing it. As busy humans, we can easily get distracted or become forgetful – we are only human. Thankfully, there are a few things we can do to help with the frustration and agonizing process of losing something, finding it, or even having it returned to us.

FOUND ME is a company that can help you with this problem. Whether it’s an object, a pet, or even a person, FOUND ME has a range of different ways they can help you reunite with what is yours, even from across the ocean.

Once the QR code is scanned by a finder, usually a good/curious samaritan, the owner (you) will be contacted immediately through an automated chat.

Here are a few things to know about FOUND ME, and how it can help you reunite with what is missing

  • QR code. Once scanned, the finder/scanner will be connected to the owner.

For example, if you happen to be in an accident, a paramedic can scan the QR code on the bracelet and gain access about you: blood type, allergies, medical conditions ect. If your child is missing, they can point to the bracelet and once scanned by another family or worker, you, the parent, will be contacted immediately.

Road Rage Is Becoming An Epidemic.

Here’s How To Survive These Dangerous Encounters

What do You need To Know About Road Rage?

According to CNN, a Wisconsin woman teaching her son to drive was shot to death in a road rage incident shortly after a minor crash. Last August, a man allegedly ran over another man he believed was throwing golf balls at his car. In July, a road-raging woman attempted to shoot another vehicle but accidentally shot her husband instead. That same month, two young children and their parents were injured in a road rage incident when a driver fired a gun at their car, igniting fire inside of the vehicle.

Sounds like an unlucky hot-blooded summer, right? Well, not really.

Road rage has been on the rise for years and is becoming more and more common. Life-threatening car accidents linked to aggressive driving have increased nearly 500 percent within the span of 10 years, making it increasingly dangerous for young and vulnerable drivers.

Road rage is becoming an epidemic, and it is leading to very serious charges ranging from felony vehicular homicide and assault, to felony menacing, to misdemeanors. In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about road rage, how serious it is, and what you can do to overcome a road rager.

accidents near me

Why Do People Have Road Rage?

Before I began educating myself on road rage, I believed that road rage consisted of yelling or cursing – but it’s actually a lot more serious than that. A nonprofit news organization that tracks gun violence, known as The Trace, found that incidents involved with guns and weapons increased dramatically over the last couple of years.

In the first 6 months, 325 violent accidents were tracked, resulting in nearly two a day. And according to statistics from the American Automobile Association’s Foundation for Traffic Safety, nearly 80 percent of drivers expressed serious aggression while driving. Reports showed that:

  • 51 percent, or 104 million Americans tailgate on purpose or ride another car’s bumper purely out of rage.
  • 47 percent, or 95 million Americans scream, holler and curse defamatory language.
  • 45 percent, or 91 million Americans honk their horn in anger or annoyance.
  • 33 percent, or 67 million drivers gesture obscenely.
  • 24 percent, or 49 million try to block another vehicle from changing lanes.
  • 4 percent, or 8 million drivers get out of their cars to confront the other driver.
  • 3 percent, or 6 million drivers are guilty for ramming another car on purpose.

But the question still remains: why do people drive so reckless and aggressively? Let’s get into some of the common reasons people tend to road rage:

The Power of Anonymity

Many drivers feel as though they are anonymous on the road, which leads them to act recklessly. Drivers develop a persona while driving that is more aggressive than what is socially acceptable because they don’t think they’re identifiable or they won’t be seen ever again. However, most drivers don’t realize how dangerous reckless and aggressive driving can be, and they have a false sense that certain actions, such as slamming on the brakes to slow down and then speeding away, are easy and safe to do. The truth is, there is nothing safe about aggressive driving and very real consequences can emerge.

highway accidents

Forgetting What it’s Like to be a New/Vulnerable Driver

If a driver has been driving for years, it can be easy for them to forget what it’s like being a new driver. New and young drivers are bound to make mistakes and drive too slow as they are not experienced drivers.  And not as confident as those who have been driving for many years.

Rushing

Rushing to work, rushing to get your kids to school, or rushing to get to an important work meeting. It seems as though rushing is a part of life, but some people struggle to find the patience when driving.

Traffic

Nobody likes sitting in traffic. Traffic can easily irritate and frustrate drivers who are prone to getting aggressive in frustrating moments. Traffic can easily trigger a road rager, especially if you are in their way.

Tips For a Road Rage Driver

Did you know that 24 hours of being awake is the same as being legally drunk? According to the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention, at least 72,000 accidents annually are caused by driving tired. It’s no surprise that safe driving starts the night before with a good night’s sleep. Not only can driving tired be as dangerous as driving drunk, but it makes you an easy target for road rage.

Following a good night’s sleep, being your best neighbor is a golden rule that can help you remember to remain calm during a frustrating situation. Give that driver who suddenly changed lanes without turning their blinker on the benefit of the doubt. Take a few deep, slow breaths and remember that not everyone on the road is as experienced or confident as you are.

road rage drive

Mind Your Manners, Even When Other Drivers Do Not

  • No tailgating.
  • Yield the right-of-way. Merging is a zipper, not a speedway. Failing to yield is one of the highest causes of car accidents.
  • Leave the left lane for passing.
  • Use turn signals and let people in.
  • Be as understanding and patient as you can be.
  • Be polite. Share the road. Apologize when you’re in the wrong.

Following your manners, tuning into your calm place can also help with road rage. Research has discovered that listening to some types of music can reduce stress, boredom and anxiety that leads to aggression and impotence.

How Can You Protect Yourself

Unfortunately, accidents are inevitable and they can happen to even the best of drivers. The best thing you can do to protect yourself from road ragers is to learn about them so that you can work on overcoming them. One of the best things you can do when dealing with a road rager who is trying to cut you off, honk at you, and startle you is to remain calm and not feed into their anger. Typically, an angry driver wants to get a reaction out of you or “punish” you for cutting them off, even if it wasn’t on purpose.

If you do happen to get into a car accident, here is something that you can do to help ensure your safety.

Learn about what to do within the first few minutes of a car accident. In a previous blog, I covered what you need to know and how to act cautiously in a serious emergency situation like accidents.

Did Your Bike Just Get Stolen? Here’s What You Can Do To Avoid Bike Theft

Bike Thieves, Are They Common?

It’s a beautiful Saturday evening. You gather your family to go on a bike ride for a picnic down the river. You park your bikes and head down the rocky path to get to the river and set up camp. It’s not until you walk back up to your bike only to realize that it’s gone. Suddenly, an hour bike ride turns into a long two-and-a-half-hour walk. It’s frustrating, but what’s bothering you is the fact you’ve just lost your favorite bike. But why did someone steal your bike? There’s nothing special with it, it’s not an expensive race bike, so why did someone steal it? Bike theft is and has always been a problem.

Typically, people don’t steal bikes to bring them home with them. They use them to get from point A to point B and then ditch them on the side of a road once their purpose has been utilized.

In this blog, we’ll cover the many ways that bike thieves work and what you can do to combat their methods and possibly reunite with your bike once it’s been dumped.

stolen bicycle

Who’s Trying To Steal My Bike?

Before getting into why thieves steal bikes, let’s get into who can be the thief. Bike thieves don’t have to resemble big scary men dressed in all black with face masks to cover their identity – they can be your next-door neighbor’s children. All a thief requires

is enough time and the necessary skills and tools to successfully steal a bike, especially if it’s padlocked. Bike thieves fall under two main categories:

The Opportunists

This is the most common type of bike thieves and can be found anywhere. An opportunist bike thief doesn’t necessarily carry tools around with them, and they don’t have much knowledge about how to steal a bike. The reality of it is, that anyone desperate enough can be an opportunist bike thief.

The Professional

The second type of bike thief is the professional. These types of thieves steal for a living and typically carry tools with them in order to help them break locks, even the ones that promise great security.

Professional thieves target any bike, but of course, they prefer the ones without a security lock. If a professional thief has time, they will be able to remove almost any bike block on the market.

What Do Bike Thieves Do With Stolen Bikes?

You’re probably wondering why people steal bikes in the first place, can’t they just buy their own? Have you ever seen an action movie where someone is running away from danger and hops on the first bike they see to make a run for it? That actually does happen. A bike is an easy escape and a perfect getaway out of any situation. Bikes don’t require gas, they’re easy to use if you know how to ride them, and you can get to a destination much quicker than if you were walking or running. Most of the time, bikes aren’t stolen premeditatedly, they’re stolen for convenience.

What To Do If Your Bike’s Been Stolen

If you’re reading this, your bike’s probably been stolen. Try to resist the urge of putting your fist through a wall. When you lose something that is valuable to you, it’s easier to accept defeat knowing you’ve done everything you possibly could rather than just give up right at the start. The following consist of a few steps that you should consider taking when noticing your bike is missing:

Alert social media

Get the word out. This will especially be helpful in small towns with small communities. Put all of your bike’s details on your social media and include where the bike was stolen. Provide a picture of the bike so that people know what to look for.

List your bike as stolen

If you’ve registered your bike with the many tracking websites for bikes, now is the time to log in and inform them that your bike has been stolen. If you haven’t registered, you can still add your bike after theft by creating an account and adding the model, serial number, and any other information that may be helpful.

How To Avoid Getting My Bike Stolen

Thieves can be smart, but so can we. Armed with knowledge about bike thieves and a few other tips and tricks, we can outsmart even the best thieves out there.

Always lock your bike, regardless of how quickly you plan to return.

A bike can be taken in the blink of an eye. As tempting as it may be to park your bike and run into the post office, take the extra minute to lock it to a tree or pole. This will be helpful in catching the thief in action if they do attempt to steal your bike with a lock on it. There are tons of bike locks on the market, to learn more about locks and protection visit Cycling News to learn more.

Park your bike strategically

Bike racks that are well-lit and in view of the public eye can be more of a challenge for thieves. They’re more likely to take a bike that is on its own on the street or in a forest.

When parking your bike at home, make sure your garage door is shut.

We feel most safe at home, but this doesn’t go the same for our bikes. A couple of bikes with a garage door opener can be the perfect opportunity for a thief to steal your and your family’s bike.

Labels and stickers with QR codes can help a finder return your abandoned bike after it’s been dumped.

Opportunist thieves are everywhere and they will typically dump stolen bikes after using them for travel. But FOUND ME can help overcome this issue. Stickers with QR codes on them can help finders return abandoned bikes to their rightful owners. Once the QR code is scanned, the finder/scanner will be automatically connected to the owner without providing any personal information, not even your phone number or address.

Dog Shelters: Giving Your Pet The Best Chances

Adopting a Pet, Here’s What You Need To Know

Is it time for you to welcome a new furry family member to your family? With all the stores and Dog Shelters out there, it can be a tricky and time-consuming process. So, where do you start?

Pets are scientifically proven to reduce stress levels and improve blood pressure. They offer a sense of love and companionship like no other. But unfortunately, not all pet owners are good owners. Each year, approximately 6.5 million pets enter animal shelters worldwide due to being abandoned, neglected, or simply lost. By adopting an animal at a shelter, you’re saving a life and gaining a companion making it a win-win situation. But adopting a pet at a shelter comes with a lot of preparation which will make the process not only easy for you, but for your new pet as well.

In this blog we will cover everything you need to do to prepare yourself and your home from dog collars and leashes to how to find the right food for your pet and what you can do to keep them safe, happy, and healthy.

The Preparation Before Adopting

Before welcoming a pet to our homes, it’s important to be prepared and that entails:

Dog Shelters- Dog-proofing your home

If you are welcoming a puppy to your home, this is especially important. Make sure that there are no small toys that your pup could choke on. There is no medicine laying around or anything that could poison your pet. Puppy pads are crucial.

Purchasing food

You’ll want to make sure you have your dog’s food chosen before your dog arrives at your home. Finding the right food for your pet’s breed, age, and size will entail a lot of research that is time-consuming if you don’t know much about dog food. To learn more about dog food and finding the right one for your pet, visit the Animal Humane Society

Leash and collar

You’ll want to have a leash and collar before going to pick your dog up at a shelter. Similar to food, there are tons of leashes or collars on the market that can offer many different things. Some collars can track your dog’s exercise and sleep patterns, shock collars, and regular collars with tons of designs you can choose from.

Dog comfort

A dog bed, crate, food and water bowl are all essential when it comes to preparing Dog Shelters for your pet. This also requires a lot of research and time, so it’s best to do it before adopting your pet.

Our pets are our best friends and companions, because of this, they should be protected at all costs. In a previous blog, I discussed why dogs run away from their owners. Dogs are intelligent animals that when frightened, stressed, lonely or bored tend to make a break for it. Whether it’s jumping a fence or digging a hole in order to escape, it’s a common behavior for most animals. The fourth of July holds the most escapes up to date, as dogs and cats get frightened by the sound of fireworks.

I explained that losing a dog does not make you a bad owner, and it doesn’t mean your pet doesn’t love you. There’s usually a reason as to why your pet has decided to make a run for it. It happens to the best of us pet owners.

Thankfully, there is a solution with FOUND ME. Tags with QR codes on them can help any good samaritan return the dog to the owner. Hundreds of thousands of dogs go missing each day and are taken to shelters. Most collars consist of a phone number, but it’s not always reliable.

FOUND ME Tags For Every Dog!

What To Do If You Get Stung by a Jellyfish

Getting Stung by Jellyfish

There’s nothing quite like the relaxation of floating in the ocean. That is until you get stung by a jellyfish of course. Pain, redness, itching, numbness, and tingling. If you’ve gotten stung by a jellyfish before, you know the discomfort and pain that I’m referring to.

In some cases, jellyfish stings can be life-threatening, and if not treated quickly, they can even lead to death.

Approximately 150 million people are stung by jellyfish each year, and 100 of those people die from poisonous stings, such as the box jellyfish. But rest assured, deadly jellyfish aren’t that common and they don’t float in surface-level waters by the shore. Fortunately, most jellyfish stings don’t require emergency or medical care. But it’s important to learn the signs that can help you determine whether or not you need medical attention. And while most stings may not be life-threatening, you could unknowingly be allergic to one.

With all of the ridiculous myths surfacing the internet, it can be difficult to know exactly what to do when facing a jellyfish sting. But armed with knowledge about jellyfish stings, what to do when you’ve been stung, and tips on how to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you, your next beach visit will be a lot less stressful.

jellyfish sting rash

Jellyfish Myths

Do you remember the iconic beach scene in Friends where Chandler pees on Monica’s leg after getting stung by a jellyfish? For years, I thought that getting stung by a jellyfish meant I had to get peed on. The reality of it is, that peeing on a jellyfish sting doesn’t alleviate pain and can actually worsen it. Urinating on a jellyfish sting has become one of the most common and talked about myths, and it stems from the idea that the ammonia and urea in urine can ultimately neutralize the burning sensation. Scientists have discovered that there’s too much water in urine for the diluted ammonia and urea to be effective. Rest assured, you do not need to get peed on when stung by a jellyfish!

Another “trick” surfacing the internet is drying out an oozy jellyfish sting in the warm sun may sound like a good idea, but, it does more harm than good. Drying a jellyfish sting in the sun is another common myth surfacing the internet that remains myth. Laying out in the sun may sound like the best distraction, but it can cause more irritation to the area creating more swelling and infection. It leaves the affected area very sensitive and the harsh sun can prolong the recovery of your sting as well as increase pain and redness.

With these myths crowding the internet, it’s not easy to know what to follow. Especially if you’ve just been stung and you’re desperate to find a solution on the internet with little time to do your research. Luckily, I have done the research and found the most helpful and efficient ways to treat a jellyfish sting. So, let’s get into what you should do to help a jellyfish sting, according to respected scientists and doctors.

mild Jellyfish sting

Treating a Jellyfish Sting

Before treating a jellyfish sting, you need to determine whether or not the sting requires medical care. If it’s a common jellyfish sting, here are a few things you can do to alleviate pain and avoid infection or inflammation:

Rinse the area with sea water.

Rinsing a sting with seawater may prevent stingers from releasing more venom

Pluck the visible tentacles

Jellyfish tentacles are fine-like needles. If they’re visible to the eye, you can carefully tweeze them out of your skin. If you can’t see any, don’t go digging in your skin.

Apply a cream

Once the area is clean, you can apply calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream to reduce redness and inflammation.

Apply a cold or warm compress

Compresses can help with pain as well as inflammation. Be careful to not put a compress directly on the skin, as this could irritate the skin even more. You can wrap the compress in a clean shirt or cloth and put it against your skin on the area.

Why Do Jellyfish Sting You

According to BBC Future, jellyfish sting as a defense mechanism. Jellyfish don’t target humans. Ultimately, jellyfish swim across the shore on surface level waters hunting for plankton and tiny organisms that drift along the water. So when a jellyfish stings you, it’s because you’ve gotten in their way. Jellyfish sting to protect themselves and eat, releasing a harmful venom that can be deadly. But it’s never the intention of a jellyfish. There are roughly 200 jellyfish species known, ranging from local jellyfish that aren’t harmful to those that are deadly – but even the deadliest ones to crave humans. Jellyfish don’t look at us as the enemy, so we shouldn’t either.

Ensure Your Safety

Although jellyfish stings can be very unpleasant, most are not harmful. But what about the ones that are? And what if you’re unknowingly allergic to a jellyfish sting? Thankfully, there are things you can do to help yourself in such situations.

What To Do When You Or Someone Is Having a Heart Attack

Am I Having a Heart Attack?

You feel a tight, heavy pain circling your chest. The pain rushes from your chest to your arms, shoulders, and neck. What could your pain mean? Could it be a heart attack?

Heart attacks are caused by an interruption of blood supply to the heart. If the blood flow is blocked, your heart is starving of oxygen and your cells begin to die. Plaque begins to build up in the walls of your coronary arteries, and when ruptured, a heart attack presents itself. Plaque can take up to minutes, hours, days, and even weeks to rupture, making it a real ticking time bomb.

Did you know that someone suffers from a heart attack every forty seconds? According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 805,000 people experience a heart attack each year. Would you feel confident in your abilities to help someone having a heart attack? Or would you know what to do if you were experiencing one? Would you know what signs to look for?

In this blog we’ll get into what you can do to help save a life, or maybe even your own. Armed with knowledge about heart attacks, what symptoms to look out for, and what you can do to help yourself and others, you’ll feel more confident about what to do when such a situation occurs.

What To Do If You Think You’re Having a Heart Attack

Many of us fear having a heart attack, especially if we live alone and are prone to them due to age or medical issues. Anger, stress, and grief are common triggers that could lead to a heart attack, but the real trigger is plaque formation in the heart’s arteries. A blood clot forms when a plaque ruptures, causing the arteries to block, eventually leading to a life-threatening heart attack.

Typically, heart attacks start slowly with mild discomfort and pain. Our bodies are extremely intelligent and send us warning signals that are important to acknowledge.

Signals Of a Heart Attack

These signals can help you determine if you are experiencing the early stages of a heart attack. The early stages of a heart attack include:

  • Chest pain, pressure, fullness, discomfort
  • Discomfort in other areas of the body
  • Difficulty breathing and dizziness
  • Nausea and cold sweats

Your body’s signals suggest you are experiencing early signs of a heart attack vary from patient to patient. Some symptoms may start and stop again, others may last for a couple of minutes up to several hours. Other heart attacks can have “beginning” symptoms that may go on for days or even weeks before the heart attack becomes severe.

If you’re alone and experience any of the symptoms:

  • Call 911. The average person waits three hours before seeking help for heart attack symptoms. Don’t take the risk of waiting and hoping for the best. Once you make the call, paramedics should arrive at your house within minutes. The sooner you get to the emergency room, the better the chance of survival.
  • Unlock your front door and sit up beside it. This makes it easier for the paramedics to find you without having to break your door down. Remember that time is of the essence.
  • Take aspirin while you wait for the paramedics. Aspirin works on platelets by stopping their clotting action. Because blood clots can block the arteries that supply blood to your heart, aspirin’s anti-clotting action means the blood can travel more easily while you wait for help.
  • Sit up and lean forward. Ensure that you are as comfortable as you can get. Sitting will ease the strain on the heart and will help you avoid getting hurt if you suddenly collapse.

What To Do If Someone Is Having a Heart Attack

Heart attacks are never planned and can creep up on you when you least expect it. You could witness someone suffering from a heart attack in the most unexpected of places or times, so it’s important to educate yourself on what you can do to help. According to Complete Care, here’s what you should do when trying to help someone experiencing a heart attack:

  • Call 911. The same rule as if you are the one experiencing the heart attack. Paramedics are trained to help and will know exactly what to do. In the meantime, there are some things you can do after calling 911.
  • Have the person chew or swallow aspirin. As previously mentioned, aspirin can help unclog the arteries.
  • If the person is unconscious or not breathing, begin CPR or use an AED:

For CPR

    • Lay the person flat on their back, tilt their head back and open their airway
    • Double-check for breathing by listening and feeling for airflow
    • If the individual is not breathing, place one hand on top of the other, interlace your fingers, keep your arms straight and use your body weight to perform compressions below the breastbone (center of the chest)
    • Perform 30 chest compressions at least 2 inches deep, and then provide 2 breaths
    • Perform about 100 to 120 compressions a minute

For AEDs:

      • AEDS are typically located in busy public areas on a visible wall
      • If an automated external defibrillator is readily available, once you turn it on, it will provide you with instructions

The Common Causes of Heart Attacks

Although heart attacks can happen to anyone, common factors. These include:

  • Age. Men forty-five and older and women fifty five and older are more likely to have a heart attack than younger men and women.
  • Tobacco. Smoking and long-term exposure to secondhand smoke is more likely to cause a heart attack.
  • High blood pressure. Over time, high blood pressure can damage arteries leading to the heart, increasing the chances of a heart attack.
  • High cholesterol. A high level of low-density cholesterol can likely narrow the arteries leading to a possible heart attack.
  • Obesity. This is linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, high levels of bad cholesterol, and low levels of good cholesterol.
  • Family history. If a brother, sister, parent, or grandparent experienced an early heart attack, this might increase your risk of having a heart attack.
  • Unhealthy diet. A diet high in sugars, fats, processed foods, trans fats, and sodium increases the risk of heart attacks.

Every Minute Matters

It’s important to act quickly when helping someone who is experiencing a heart attack. About half of those who die from heart attacks do so within the first hour after symptoms begin. Immediate action is required. Witnessing or experiencing a heart attack is a very scary and unpleasant situation, but thankfully there are ways to help you in such a situation. It’s important to be prepared. Nobody plans on having a heart attack. Whether you’re at a restaurant, on a plane, or at a mall – it can occur anywhere and anytime. One important step when being prepared is to create a survival plan that includes information about medicines you’re taking, known allergies, your doctor’s number, and people to contact in case you go to the hospital. And you can do this with FOUND ME.

Amusement Park Nightmares Children Get Lost at Amusement Parks Everyday

Losing Your Child at a Theme Park

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare when children get lost at amusement parks- losing sight of their child in a huge crowd. Popcorn, cotton, candy and prizes, there’s nothing like the fun and thrill of an amusement park. But they can create major nerves for a parent.

People and children run around racing to the next ride, it’s loud and there are distractions everywhere. The fear of losing a child is something parents have to deal with on a daily basis. It’s truly one of the scariest feelings in the world.

Children, and especially toddlers, are extremely vulnerable, and they can be unpredictable when lost and afraid. It’s common for children to get scared when they can’t find their parents, and looking for them can be just as terrifying.

Unfortunately, children get lost at amusement parks everyday, and it can happen to anybody despite how careful you are. The good news is, there are ways that you can increase your chances of reuniting with your missing child when facing such a situation. With knowledge about what to do when looking for a missing child and how to ensure a safe and efficient way of reuniting with them as fast as possible, your next visit to a crowded area will be a lot less stressful.

Amusement Park Nightmares USA

Why Do We Lose Children at Theme Parks

It’s the kind of thing you probably think would never happen to you – until it does. And if your children get lost at amusement parks before, you know the stress and fear that comes with it during the entire search process. It may be questionable to some parents, how could they possibly lose sight of their child? But it’s a lot easier than you may think.

Here are a few common ways children get lost at theme parks:

Getting distracted

It really does just take a couple of seconds for your child to walk off, especially at an amusement park where there is a lot of commotion, colors, people in costumes, and toys. While a parent is at a food stand giving their order or purchasing another ticket for a ride, a child can easily wander off, get lost and forget their way back.

Holding the wrong child’s hand

This happens all too often. A distracted parent may grab what they think is their child’s hand and walk with them as they observe a map or speak with a friend. Toddlers may be too young or distracted to even notice that the hand they’re holding is in fact a stranger’s hand.

Waiting for a child at the exit of a ride.

Once the ride is over, children race back to their parents. But some children can easily get confused and lost as they search for their parents in a crowd of other parents and children. Desperate and scared, they may run off thinking you are farther than they thought.

Children Get Lost at Amusement Parks

What To Do Children Get Lost at Amusement Parks?

Amusement parks are a child’s dream playground – a 110 acre playground holding roughly 60,000 people a day from all over the world. It’s no secret that children go missing at the blink of an eye.

There are steps that you can take to avoid losing your child in a crowd of thousands of people. Here is a list of things you and your child can practice before going to an amusement park:

Plan ahead

As parents, we often tell our children not to talk to strangers. By telling your child to stick by you and avoid following strangers can help avoid them from wandering off. However, if your child does get lost, you can inform your child that it’s safe to speak to employees or workers at an amusement park. By showing them what to look for, they can go to a worker and inform them that they have lost their parents. Typically, a worker will quickly understand if a child, alone and in distress, has lost their parents without them having to say anything. So if your child is too young to speak or too shy, workers are quick to understand and help.

Tell your child what to do if they can’t find you.

If your child can’t find you, the best thing for them to do is remain in the same place they realized they couldn’t find you. If you are both running around looking for each other, you could be going in circles. A worker at a theme park is likely to notice that your child is on its own and will usually stay with them until they are found by their parents.

Don’t panic.

I know – it sounds a lot easier said than done. Children don’t like being alone and typically panic when they have lost sight of their parents. With both you and your child overwhelmed, it can make it a lot more difficult to think strategically and find your child. Theme parks ensure the safety of children and will not leave your child crying on its own in a dark alleyway. Your child will be found – keep calm and retrace your steps.

Tell your child that it’s okay if they get lost.

Children get easily embarrassed and tend to get embarrassed when lost. As a child, not being able to find their parents is stressful and scary and most children cry out of fear. Let them know that it’s okay to be worried and reassure them that if they do get lost, stay in one place until you do find them.

You’ve Just Shared Your Phone Number, but Have You Thought About What Else You Have Shared?

Why You Should Keep Your Phone Number Private

Phone Number Privacy

How many accounts do you think you’ve signed up for using your phone number over the years? Probably hundreds, right? And how many times have you mindlessly put your phone number on a form?

Beyond the friends and loved ones you knowingly share your number with, the reality of it is too many strangers have your phone number.

We all know the importance of protecting our social security number, but what if I told you that criminals can actually do more harm with your phone number than with your social security card? The more your number is floating around, the more exposed you are to criminals. But regardless of how long you’ve had your current phone number, or how many times you’ve handed it out, it’s never too late to learn how to be more discreet with it and think twice before sharing it with strangers.

In today’s world, phone numbers act as identifiers, and our numbers enable us to connect through a range of social media and internet applications and services. Who Can Access My Personal Information With My Phone Number?

Once your phone number has been released to the public eye, criminals can easily access your personal information. You’re probably wondering who these people are, and how can they access your personal information with just your phone number? Let’s take a look at who precisely seeks to access your information, and what they can do with it:

Hackers.

We’re all somewhat familiar with hackers. They are known for using their computer or networking skills to access personal and private information as well as gain unauthorized access to systems or networks in order to commit crimes – specifically fraudulent crimes. With your phone number, a hacker can easily access accounts affiliated with the phone number, and social media is one of the most common platforms to hack using a phone number.

Scammers.

A number of online communities, like dating sites, have noticed an increasing amount of scammers over time. With your phone number, online scammers can steal your identity by posing as you and take advantage of others by soliciting close friends and family members for favors, such as asking for money. Scammers who have no control over your phone number can still make it a target for phishing texts and spam calls to try and lure you into clicking a link or providing personal information. Typically, the scammer will send you an email from a reputable company asking you to confirm personal information or credentials, such as the last four digits of your credit card. That’s when the crime begins.

What a Scammer Can Do With Your Phone Number

Let’s be honest – you’ve probably shared your number more times than you should have. These days, it’s become nearly impossible to keep your phone number safe and private, but rest assured. You can ensure the most safety possible by following a few simple steps and tips:

Avoid sharing your phone number as much as possible.

Seems obvious, right? But you’d be surprised by how many people jot down their phone numbers without hesitation. I included it before to guide about the dangers of it of course. We have been conditioned to share our phone numbers for most of our lives. We punch in our digits at grocery stores and pharmacies, and we use them to verify our identity for social media, online banking, and other common services. Now it’s time to ask yourself if it’s really worth the risk.

The Risk:

So let’s talk about the risk. What’s the worst that could happen, it’s just a phone number? That’s what I used to think. But the reality of it is a lot more disturbing than you may have thought. According to a report in the New York Times, it only took an hour for a person’s phone number to expose their entire life. With information as private as:

  • Current home address, including square footage, cost of the property, and taxes paid
  • Past addresses from the last decade
  • Full names of family members, such as mother, father, sister, and aunt
  • Past phone numbers, including landline for parents’ home
  • Information about a previously owned property, including mortgage taken out on it

All of this private information was leaked when the person jotted down their number into a database. And to make the situation even worse, the hacker had the opportunity to:

  • Reset the password for an online account by answering security questions like “what is your mother’s maiden name?” or “which of the previous addresses did you live at?”
  • Use the personal information linked to the phone number to trick a customer service representative for the phone carrier into porting the number onto a new SIM card, resulting in a hijack practice known as SIM swapping.
  • A hijacker with control of the phone number could break into the accounts and receive a security code in a text message when logging into an online account.
  • Use the phone number to trick family members into sharing their passwords or sending money.
  • Target the phone number with phishing texts and scam calls, also known as robocalls.

When It’s Wise to Share Your Phone Number & How To Protect Your Information

After covering all the reasons why sharing your phone number can be dangerous, there are some situations when sharing it can be reasonable. For example, when you enter your username and password to get into your online bank account, the bank may call or text you with a temporary code that enables you to log into your account. This is known as the two-factor verification process and is a security mechanism that helps you prove who you say you are. Many popular platforms offer this security system, such as Google, Facebook, and Instagram.

When it comes to protecting your private information, such as your phone number, risks always follow. But armed with knowledge about the dangers of providing your number to just anybody, and what you can do to keep your phone number safe, you’ll be a lot less vulnerable.

FOUND ME is a company that focuses on confidentiality. FOUND ME consists of tags, labels, stickers, bracelets, and necklaces with QR codes on them. Instead of engraving your number and address down on your dog’s collar, or providing your personal information on your luggage tags, FOUND ME will help you secure that information while helping you reunite with what’s missing. Typically, we put our name, number, and address on the things we fear losing, such as dog tags, backpacks, and suitcases. With a FOUND ME tag, a finder, such as a good samaritan, will scan the QR code automatically and can easily connect without sharing your phone number or location. It’s completely up to you whether you would like to provide those details to the finder.

I used to put my phone number and address on everything: keys, laptop, backpack, luggage, and of course, my pets. FOUND ME helps me keep that information private and confidential.

How FOUND ME can help you?

FOUND ME offers a range of different ways to help you in different situations:

Emergency

Bracelets and necklaces act as emergency tools by offering paramedics access to medical information such as blood type, allergies, height, weight, and other crucial medical information. It’s up to the owner of the bracelet or necklace to display personal/medical information. Emergency contact can give access to medical records and history when anyone scans the QR code. Or, you can opt for the information you want to share in case anyone scans the QR code. Once scanned, up to 5 emergency contacts will be informed about the emergency.

Lost pets

Pet tags with QR codes on them can enable lost pets to reunite with their owners as quickly and as safely as possible. When scanned, the owner and up to 5 other emergency contacts will be notified via push notification, text message, and or email, that their pet has been found without sharing any unnecessary personal information.

Lost belongings

Putting labels and tags on any valuable belongings such as your laptop, luggage, backpack, prescription glasses, or wallet will also have a better chance of finding its way back to you. When scanned, you will be notified without providing details of your address or phone number.

Lost children

Bracelets and necklaces can help a lost child reunite with their parents or family by asking another family for help and pointing to the QR code. It’s important to tell your children to look for other families with children and not just a random strangers. Families live with the fear of losing their children on a daily basis and are more inclined to help your child more than anybody else.

People with Alzheimer’s

Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease tend to wander off and get lost. By wearing a bracelet or necklace, they can find help. When scanned, the caretaker will be notified and will be in contact through a secure and automated chat with the finder/scanner and can even start a video call.

Everything that FOUND ME has to offer focuses on securing and protecting your personal and private information while helping you at the same time. Now that you’ve learned the importance of keeping your phone number private, you can take the additional steps to help give you an alternative to putting the number just anywhere.
